At least three individuals have lost their lives, and numerous others have sustained injuries following the derailment of a passenger train in southwestern Germany, as reported by NDTV.
The incident took place in a wooded region near the town of Riedlingen in the state of Baden-Württemberg on Sunday evening (July 27) local time. The train was transporting approximately 100 passengers.
The passenger train was en route from the German town of Sigmaringen to the city of Ulm when it derailed in a forested area.
Initially, police reported four fatalities; however, they later updated their statement to indicate three deaths. Authorities have refrained from disclosing the number of injured individuals or the severity of their injuries. Nevertheless, the tabloid Bild cited emergency personnel stating that 50 individuals were injured in the incident.
German rail operator Deutsche Bahn confirmed multiple fatalities and a significant number of injuries. The company also indicated that two train carriages had derailed for "unknown reasons."
The operator stated that authorities are currently investigating the situation and that traffic along a 40-kilometer (25-mile) stretch has been halted. German media have suggested that the accident may have been triggered by a landslide resulting from a severe storm in the area, according to the weather service.
Footage from the scene depicted yellow and gray train carriages overturned beside the tracks. Firefighters and emergency services are working to reach the passengers.
In a social media post, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims. He also mentioned that he was in close communication with both the Home and Transport Ministers and had directed them to "provide all necessary support to the emergency services."
