An Air Force training aircraft has crashed at the Diabari campus of Milestone College, raising concerns about multiple casualties.

A firefighter engaged in the rescue efforts informed TBS that at least six to seven students suffered burn injuries following the aircraft crash that ignited the fire.

A training aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) caught fire upon crashing into a building located within the Milestone College campus in Diabari, Uttara, the capital, resulting in several casualties.

As reported by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the F-7 BGI training aircraft departed at 1:06 PM today (21 July) and subsequently crashed onto the college campus shortly thereafter.

Rescue teams from the Bangladesh Army, along with the Fire Service and Civil Defence, are currently on-site to assist victims and extinguish the fire.

According to eyewitness accounts, one individual has died from their injuries; however, additional information regarding the casualty cannot be confirmed at this time.

Currently, it is uncertain how many individuals were injured or if there were any fatalities. Videos posted on social media by witnesses at the scene depicted Army personnel transporting several injured students away from the site of the crash.

"We moved some of the injured with burns using a rickshaw and a van. Their clothes were torn and some were even seen walking towards the rescue vehicles with their burned bodies," stated teacher Nuruzzaman Mridha.

In front of Lubana General Hospital in the Uttara area, one student was observed desperately crossing the road while carrying another student with burn injuries on his lap—eventually, he was able to secure an ambulance and proceeded towards Dhaka Medical College.

Naimul Hasan Adit, a first-year arts student at Milestone College, was the first to witness the fighter plane crash into building number 7 on the college grounds.

"Then it struck the primary school building, approximately 100-150 meters away from us. The pilot ejected from the aircraft using a parachute," he informed TBS.

Previously, the crash was confirmed by police and Tarikul Islam, the public relations officer for the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

"A fighter jet has crashed into a building at Milestone College in the Diabari area," remarked Mohidul Islam, deputy commissioner of the Uttara division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, during a conversation with The Business Standard.

Firefighters arrived at the scene around 1:22 PM. At least eight firefighting units from Uttara, Tongi, Pallabi, Kurmitola, Mirpur, and Purbachal fire stations are currently engaged in operations at the site.

A firefighter involved in the rescue efforts informed TBS that at least six to seven students suffered burn injuries as a result of the aircraft crash and the subsequent fire.Currently, patients have begun to arrive at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery from Uttara. One individual has been admitted to the hospital, as confirmed by the institute's resident physician, Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman.

In a conversation with TBS, Lima Khanam, the duty officer at the Fire Service central control room, stated, "The rescue operation is ongoing, and we cannot provide information about the casualties until it concludes. An official briefing will take place on-site at that time."

It remains uncertain whether the aircraft's pilot, identified as Squadron Leader Md Towkir Islam of the BAF, was able to eject before the plane crashed.

Despite some Facebook posts claiming that Towkir died in the crash, his colleagues informed TBS that they have not yet received any official confirmation regarding his status.

A director from the college, who wished to remain anonymous, shared with TBS, "The plane suddenly crashed into several coconut trees and other greenery on our Diabari campus. The aircraft was engulfed in flames, and students hurried to the scene."

Witnesses reported that the aircraft collided with a building that primarily served as a classroom for children from playgroup and above, just as students were arriving after classes had concluded for the day.

In the meantime, two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been dispatched to aid in the rescue efforts and to ensure law and order at the site.
